Porto Grande

16°58'N 24°57'W - It was just before sunrise that we dropped our anchor in this large bay called Porto Grande, on São Vicente. Our goal here is to fill up our diesel tank. And then wait for wind.

The bayside is a mixture of colorful old Portuguese buildings, a few modern concrete blocks, and some less modern industrial stuff; some palm trees between them. A ruined jetty and a rusted wreck of a cargo ship complete the impression of this very poor, very African town.
It's pretty busy in the bay: About 30 yachts are already anchored here, more are expected. They obviously form some source of income for the locals: already a couple of Cape Verdians in an old dinghy offered us the friendly service of watching over our boat while we would go ashore. Thanks, "my friend". Maybe later.
